What is Fibromyalgia?

We are still not quite sure: the only thing I know is that it came out of the blue, one day my baby girl, aged 4 at the time, started suffering pain literally everywhere, she felt her clothes burn her skin and thought there were nails on the floor and in her slippers... Researchers are working on it.

Fibromyalgia is a complex condition that affects millions of people in the United States only: it is thought 1 in 16 Americans suffer from it, 9 out of 10 are women, and there is no specific age range, except that it appears more commonly after the age of 40. However, unfortunately, children can be affected too.

It can cause pain, stiffness, fatigue, memory loss, muscle, and sleep problems, among many others.

The cause(s) of fibromyalgia is (are) still a mystery, but there are many different theories about it.

One theory is that the disease may be due to inflammation caused by a virus or bacteria in the muscles and nervous system.

Another theory is that it's caused by sleep disturbances and stress.

Other theories include an immune system problem or damage to the brain's central nervous system (CNS).

More recent studies suggest that an imbalance between nervous system chemicals called neurotransmitters may be involved in fibromyalgia.

Researchers are still trying to figure out exactly what causes fibromyalgia, but they are making progress every day, so don't be surprised if next week you will find a different theory than the ones summarised today: that will mean progress!

Whilst we are not yet sure about the causes of Fibro, and thus there is no cure available, we know how to ease and eventually eliminate the discomfort caused by the symptoms, and we are able to make Fibromyalgia virtually symptom-free.
